Non-Traditional Ways To Learn Design

Study Logos …not 1000 of them in a book (though those are useful and fun too)… take a logo a day and spend an hour just looking at it. Put it aside then look at it again later. Print it in black and white and in color. Post it everywhere. Then, just sit and stare at it again. -Have more time? Take a couple hours to recreate it. YouTube With an awesome amount of tutorials on just about everything...

Every time I find this note, I keep it on my desk for a little while… Always good advice to myself!  Read More →

Custom jQuery Mobile Themes

Here’s something for designers… I was recently looking around for jQuery Mobile themes and really couldn’t find much. jQuery Mobile is pretty well laid out and it’s easy to work on theming. Since it’s pretty new, not a lot of people have been making templates for it yet. Some have been doing themes geared to mobiles for WordPress but not general themes. It could be a good...

Healthify Your Cereal App

Here’s an app idea that could be really interesting. I love cereal. I’ll be honest, I think I know more about cereal and their nutritional values than most people do. While most people spend a few minutes here and there looking at the cereal box, I really enjoy them and when there’s nothing to read, well… the nutritional labels tend to attract my attention. One thing I have...

Web Site Idea: Run My Bed and Breakfast

Running a B&B is hard work. Working at home is one thing when you can close the door to your upstairs office at night and take time to go out for a nice dinner. In a B&B, though, you’re getting calls at all times of day (and night), and, unless you don’t have a guest one night, someone has to be home and available. Should there be a longer period of unavailability (illness or trip),...

Business Lesson: Sit and Stare

We’ve all been taught “Don’t stare, don’t stare!” Well, in this case, you’ll have to forget everything your mom taught you… sort of. Quite a few years ago, I was hoping to open a store in a particular mall. I was lucky enough to have a friend of the family who was a retail consultant. When I told him about my plans, he brought me over to the mall and we...

Don’t Just Start Another Groupon

The big trend lately is the deal sites. It seems like everyone’s trying to start a Groupon clone. Here’s why that can be a bad idea. Groupon is very established Tons of others are trying to do the same Groupon spends MILLIONS on advertising But… that doesn’t mean you can’t be a part of the trend. There’s another way. I’ve been thinking that there is a lack...

Cleaning Service Business… Work Smarter Not Harder

You’ll see me say it a lot… I strongly believe in “work smarter, not harder.” Is there an easier, better way to do something? One case where this came to mind is a cleaning company. Cleaners often spend as much if not more time travelling to a client’s location (generally unpaid) than they spend actually cleaning it. Working smarter would be this: Pick two or three buildings...

Flower Emergency App

Here’s an interesting idea. You would make arrangements with a flower shop (preferably one that offers delivery around the world with a short lead time). When the person first downloads the app, you would arrange for them to set up a method of payment. Then, anytime they need flowers, they can quickly place an order and specify a location (maybe pick from a few different options but keep it...

Easy Way To Open .pages Document In Windows

A client recently sent a .pages file and I always prefer to find a way if possible to open the file without having to ask the client to resend in another format. Thanks to the folks who posted here, I found an EXTREMELY easy solution. Simply save the file to your hard drive, then rename it by changing the extension to .zip (so filename.zip instead of filename.pages). Then, just open it up just as...
