Business Lesson: Sit and Stare

We’ve all been taught “Don’t stare, don’t stare!” Well, in this case, you’ll have to forget everything your mom taught you… sort of. Quite a few years ago, I was hoping to open a store in a particular mall. I was lucky enough to have a friend of the family who was a retail consultant. When I told him about my plans, he brought me over to the mall and we...

Easy Way To Open .pages Document In Windows

A client recently sent a .pages file and I always prefer to find a way if possible to open the file without having to ask the client to resend in another format. Thanks to the folks who posted here, I found an EXTREMELY easy solution. Simply save the file to your hard drive, then rename it by changing the extension to .zip (so filename.zip instead of filename.pages). Then, just open it up just as...

New Series on App Development for Beginners

It seems like everyone’s talking about them… Apps. But developing them, though not the easiest thing in the world, has gotten quite a bit easier lately. We’ll be featuring a number of resources, and providing some step-by-step articles on how to create apps. As well, along with the nature of this site… The whole “My head is full. Take my business ideas” concept…...

Getting Return Visits From Your Company’s Deals on Groupon and Other Deal Sites

The concept is definitely interesting for businesses… The deal sites will advertise your business, get people in the door, and “pay” you for the privilege of promoting you. Of course, you’re paid quite a bit less than the original value of the service. Usually, 50% of the price they charge for the offer. But I see that as the cost of doing business. Instead of paying for ads...

Resources: Screen Shots - How To Make An Image Of What's On Your Screen
Have something on the screen that you want to save? There are two ways to do a screen shot. Both are pretty easy. One, (assuming you are using Windows) is to simply press the “Print Screen” key on your keyboard. Yes, that key that really doesn’t seem to do anything. Well, it actually does something. As soon as you press the key, it saves what’s on your screen in memory. Sort...

Resources: Free Screencast/Screen Capture Video Recording

Resources: Free Screencast/Screen Capture Video Recording
I’ve been looking at doing some tutorial videos at some point and I had been looking at CamStudio, an open-source (free) software program to do the recording. But tonight, while on Twitter, on those suggested accounts you might like, it recommended @screenr – I went to have a look (I thought it was trading related which is one of my strong interests)… Turns out it’s a site called...

Adding Twitter, Facebook Like and Other Social Buttons

Adding Twitter, Facebook Like and Other Social Buttons
? I love the idea of the Facebook Like button. It lets people easily “Like” your site, and at the same time puts it on their profile for anyone reading it to see. They’re showing their support or interest in your site, and promoting it to all of their friends. And setting it up is way easier than you’d think! You can either go directly to Facebook’s page about this. Twitter...

Resources: Free Online Photoshop Replacement

Resources: Free Online Photoshop Replacement
Of course, if you’re doing some specific advanced graphics work, Adobe Photoshop is an amazing program and there’s really not much out there that can truly rival it. Then, at the other end, there’s the basic MS Paint, included on every computer with Windows, which is ideal for quick graphics. It can do a lot of interesting stuff including rounded corners, text with a transparent...

Solution: Maximum File Size in Notepad – Longer Files

If you search “maximum file size in notepad,” answers will vary… from 45k (which is way off with new systems) to some people saying they’ve opened files hundreds of megabytes large. Removing word wrap is one way to help speed up the loading time of a large file if you do it this way. But an interesting solution is open source software called Notepad++ I found it when i needed...

I never thought this would be so freeing!

I’ve been thinking of doing this for many years… a site with my business ideas… But until I actually launched this, I didn’t realize how freeing it would be. I’m really enjoying putting the pieces together in my head… sort of organizing the millions of bits and pieces i’ve collected over the years for likely thousands of business ideas. I’ve sort of...
